An Underworld by Hideyoshi An Underworld by Hideyoshi
"An Underworld" - EOW topic, I am back in game! :)

PS 7, 2.5-3h, no ref.

I have slowly began to change the way that I am approaching a painting. Craig Mullins is a big idol in that context...
I need to deepen my knowledge on how to apply correct values with a solid drawing and design with directly applying color tones vs overlaying color later.
The 'squint factor' is very important.

Does the squint factor help by removing the details and allowing the artist to see the larger scene?

Might be an advanced topic for me.

Looks good.

yeah you can say that. It makes for a good read on value and compostition.
If it looks realistic at squint level, it's a good thing obviously. :)

I'm absolutely loving the perspective!

It really gives you a feel for the subterranean experience this city has. The colors are amazing, and I almost believe that if I squint harder, I cans ee farther below...!

Is that this "squint factor" you speak of? :+fav:

thanks! :)
squint factor means that if you blur your vision it comes close to looking like a photo, thus realistic. In that regard, proper value and lighting is important :)

Totally awesomely-cool. I love the blue triangle-thingies, they are very cool :XD:

And the perspective on the whole thing is really cool - and my, how detailed it is!!! You really are brilliant at doing all this work!!!

The perspective really reminds me of anime like Metropolis... and games like Silent Bomber... you just capture the scenery really well... you ROCK!!!

You've done it again, H....another terrific piece.

If I may say so, I'd love to see you refine your color pieces some more. They're so full of life and detail, but to actually be able to pick out the details would be really cool too.

Keep it up...

I always wonder what it really takes to be able to build such sci-fi landscapes. A lot of reference? Practice over certain, maybe simpler elements of industrial design? Both? (Q)

It's still great, with the two spectators giving the impression of a vaster landscape.;)

the most difficult part is making something fictional look realistic - like it could exist for real. For that you need to know about proper lighting and design etc. Reference can hardly be found when it comes to sci-fi, so you need to gather your knowledge from real-life stuff and then applpy it to your sci-fi art :)

what`s the meaning of "squint factor" ?
Reply
:iconhideyoshi:

the photoreal quality you get from an otherwise sketchy painting when squinting your eyes.
Just look at some of Mullins pieces that way and you'll see what I mean! :)

heh, and that coming from you! Thanks, man! :)
What to say, I kinda became more calm and thoughtful when painting. I don't just rush in everything half-heartedly anymore but try to think clearly about how I apply color and value. It's a whole new challenge to paint directly with correct values (I don't like amateurish transparent layering of tones anyway) and colors... :) I love to apply 'thick' paint. :headbang:
You know you don't need any help, bud! Just get at it! :D
You have sparse time doing personal pieces, do you?

For now, yea.. a good 2 months or so till im released from my military duties back into the civillian world! Taste of freeedommmm :food:

Okay but seriously though, on a more technical level. You might notice I enjoy the thick lay-on style as well, but to get that to all that uber grey values in the illus? You dont use a histogram tool do you...
