Citizen in the Temple - Poster by Hideyoshi Citizen in the Temple - Poster by Hideyoshi
Yo!
I painted this poster for a pre-production campaign for Jason Huls, a Chicago filmmaker who is making a shortfilm, called Citizen in the Temple. Sci Fi meets Fantasy! Find out everything about it and see the poster version on www.jasonhuls.com

I will also be working on some concept art for the film, stay tuned!

It automatically made me think of some hero calling himself the citizen whose base was something called the temple where he looks over the city protecting it and trying to make it a better place. He over looks the city from his temple wondering if he did enough.

There's... something about the floor grating that I love. My eye keeps getting pulled to it. I don't know why. But the red under-glow, the wiring, the grating, the light smoke, all of it keeps drawing my attention. Like, I can almost hear the thrum of machinery, the hiss of steam, smell the acrid smoke of ancient machinery.

I like the whole image, but the flooring is made of win to me.

This is brilliant! Very intriguing! I like the contrast between the perhaps more traditional fantasy foreground and then the much more sci-fi view out the window!! :D

I highly recommend working with LHR. I was really pleased how he showed me the concept as it evolved and he really nailed the vibe I'm going for. Can't wait for the concept art. This is going to be a really fun project!

Nice work, as always! I feel i should mention, for your consideration anyway, that what i assume is a hilt looks very phallic in this image, especially due to the pose and its position.

Not judging or anything! I just thought I should point it out! :)

lol its funny, but when i painted this, I was kinda aware of the possibility of association, but didn't quite know what to change about it. I added those spikes :P It's like: how the hell do I position that sword so it doesn't look like 'that' :D
might really change it

Hehe :D

Well, if I may suggest, you could flatten out the end of the hilt, widen the crossbar (to give it more emphasis), and make sure it's all very consistently cylindrical so that it looks metallic rather than organic. You can also knock down its shadows so it's more in silhouette and looks less fleshy too.

And/or you can make him left handed and show the sword in the front, which might be pretty interesting. :)

Good luck!! I apologize if I sound nit-picky or pushy or anything--I just wanna help!

Nice to see some figurative work from you. I have been a fan of yours for some time now and I gotta say that cudos on getting this gig, this piece is a little stiff in comparison to your other work. Probably due to the 3D element.

Awesome dude, love the lighting in this one.

Also, how do you like Wings3D and Modo? I've been getting into SketchUp lately, and I have more of a background in 3ds Max. Anything worth knowing?

wings3d seems very straight forward to me who is not experienced with complex modelling techniques. I usually model whatever I need to compose into a scene, set up a camera and render. That circular building for example. Also the floor and pillows on the sides. Modo is awesome for rendering I think! But my methods are very noobish :P
thanks!

Awesome dude. Have you tried SketchUp at all? It's crazy easy for modeling, especially for people with no experience. Plus, it's free, can't beat that. Only problem is the free version doesn't have an ability to export to another 3D package.

However, there's a free renderer that works great that you can use, called Kerkythea.
