Heavy Gear Assault - Arena concept by Hideyoshi Heavy Gear Assault - Arena concept by Hideyoshi
Just came back from the GDC in San Francisco - good times!
Here is a concept art piece I painted up for Heavy Gear Assault. Rough 3D blockout base by Craig Mesaros.

There's something innately awesome about Mecha isn't there.

Did you go to school to get this good? Or was it extreme practice.

Somehow the hexagon shape door looks like the 3D first person version of Metroid for the Gamecube.

I think the glass barrier and holographic adverts are a little out of place in the Mad-Maxian look of the arena... maybe replace them with chainlink fence and banners?

Just a suggestion. Great piece overall.

That is meant to be the look of the Heavy Gear universe, to some degree. Mechas fighting next to farmers using mules, for example.

Sounds interesting. I love that kind of technological juxtaposition... is there any other info on the project you have, or is it one of those things you won't be able to talk about until it's released?

Ah, well! I'm glad you asked! Heavy Gear is in fact a very old game! Began in the 90's as a table-top wargame akin to Warhammer, though on a smaller scale and with very very different rules. There were also two PC games released, the second of which is an absolute classic. More important than either of those games though, there was a table-top roleplaying game released back then as well, that created an incredibly deep, vibrant world, set primarily on the distant, isolated planet of Terra Nova in the.... I believe the 3600's, but don't quote me on that.

The mechas of the setting are called "gears", and are drastically less powerful than is typical of mecha. They stand only a few metres tall, and are a kind of heavy infantry. A tank, for example, is typically more heavily armed and armoured than a gear, but less maneuverable. Gears are humanoid in shape, I should mention.

Heavy Gear Assault is a recent project, not very far into development. Sadly, I'm not working on it, I've just been a fan of Heavy Gear for decades. Heavy Gear Assault is going to be an online game, and that's all we know at the moment.

Currently, Heavy Gear exists as a table-top wargame, and a smaller, spin-off arena combat game, which, it appears, will be what Heavy Gear Assault is based off of.

I HIGHLY recommend the forum. You'll not find a nicer group of people who are passionate about their hobby.

*set in the 6100's AD, rather. So it's far future, but not necessarily super-advanced tech.

Which 3D program did you use for base?
