Steampunk Centipede by Hideyoshi Steampunk Centipede by Hideyoshi
Here is my Steampunk Challenge entry.
I chose a japanese myth about Hidesato, an archer who went and slew the giant Centipede by shooting an arrow which was dipped in his own saliva.

Dunno, how long it took.. I know I was using more time staring at the image without painting anything. It's a bad habit of mine when I work on 'bigger' paintings. It looses intuitiveness and swiftness in a painting which is bad.

I didnt have any reference, but looked at photos for the sky colors to get the time of the day right.
Some parts of the Centipede were quickly modelled and pasted in, overpainting.

here is some 75% detail shots:

oh yeah..... THE ARCHER IS LOOKING AT THE CENTIPEDE
FROM THE CORNER OF HIS EYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111

Hey
First of all I love the image, looks so awesome
Second of all I have a steampunk blog on Tumblr
accendamur.tumblr.com/ where I am beginning to write my own steampunk novel and was wondering if I could upload your image. I would of course include the link to your picture in the description and not take any credit for it.
Many thanks
Jammieone

Great design on the archer's suit (uniform?) and on the centipede itself!

I know! It's a Medusa centipede - if you look straight at it, you will be turned to stone.
PS
Nice pants, mr. Archer. :icontehestareplz:

Omigoodness, the flow of this is simply amazing. I absolutely love it! Throwing my own personal opinion in here, I think his head turned towards the centipede would have made his pose more ..dynamic? (Not saying that he can't look at that 'pede through the corner of his eye! lol, I think I would have just liked that better.) The lighting is gorgeous and the movement is quite yummy. Lovely overall!

How is a bow and arrow supposed to be effective against this bohemoth. Is this a Darwin Award on the way?

The detail in this is gorgeous, I could stare at it all day! I love the lighting and the angle, and of course how you managed to capture the movement of the centipede.

Even though it's not obvious that he's eyeing the creature out of the corner of his eye I guess it gives him just that bit more of a "badass" factor for shooting the beastie without even having to look at it!

Great job on everything, except that aiming a target from the corner of the eye can be very risky in his situation.

He could be blindfolded and aiming at his feet, since he has no chance of making a scratch in that iron armored centipede with that little arrow whatsoever.

Which is good, because I want travel through the desert sitting on centipede-san.
