another one for EOW, but I am not taking it to poll, just using the topic as inspiration.

2 h, no ref.

I try to mimick traditional media a lot nowadays. Using very few brushes on a single layer (well, I almost always do it this way). Studying old masters like Sargent, Sorolla etc.

Trust me and learn digital painting the right way, applying direct colors and values with simple brushes and well-thought strokes. No fancy custom brush trickery and layer modes crap etc. You will get farthest that way! Also, hone your drawing since it's key to a skillful painting!
(sorry for preaching... :D hey, I should maybe make a journal and stuff all that art babbling in there)

good job. I was going to try EOW right after the unicorn valley topic. Studying the old masters is a great idea, I'm going to start studying sargent myself, maybe I'll give sorolla a try. What do you mean by using fewer brushes on a layer though?

Nice one man! Great atmosphere and perspective.

I agree with what you said above. Although, custom brushes, layer modes etc., can be alot of fun to experiment with and can produce fast results, people tend to rely on them to heavily when they start painting digitaly and depend on the brushes to do all of the drawing for them. I see alot of that here on DA. So ya, constantly hone your real drawing skills. I would even suggest people break out the old pens, pencils and markers as well then go back to your Wacom. The result of that can be amazing at times.
