Just came back from a pre-premiere 3D viewing of Avatar.
It was a sheer blast and impossible to describe with words as the experience is something I have never witnessed before.
Serisouly, don't watch this anywhere else than in a 3D cinema! You will realize for the first time what it means to really get immersed into a fatastical world.

For those who don't know, James Cameron developed a new 3D stereoscopic camera system ('Virtual Camera' ) that allows him to see his actors turned into CG characters and set in CG environments in real-time while shooting and also lends extensive 3D depth to the images. CG effects are no longer an exclusive part of post-production that need to be inserted afterwards but can be viewed and altered during shooting according to the director's and actors' needs.

And now look forward to seeing it on the big screen in 3D (and nowhere else...)! :D

EDIT:

Story-wise it's pretty familiar stuff but with lots of incredibly rich new concepts that make this a unique saga. I read that Cameron invented a logically built-up new language with a linguist just for the movie and created a Pandora encyclopedia (Pandora Pedia) naming and describing every animal and plant on the planet. You can literally feel and see the energy that went into creating everything. The creature designs alone are stunning!
This is a BIG comeback for Cameron, he spent the last 12 years on this and actually waited for technology to reach a level that would enable him to shoot Avatar. Now that's what I call dedication.
There is a few scenes and one-liners that are a little cheesy, but I think Cameron very-well managed to create what one would call a new Sci-Fi - Fantasy Epic.
He's planning to make this a trilogy.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. This has Sigourney Weaver in it :3

Now I can't wait for his Battle Angel Alita...

Hmm.... I am still pretty sceptical about all this. I hate overuse of CGI And I very much know when I see it - AND I thought AVATAR was going to be kinda serious SCIFI.
I dont know how many here know much about ASTROBIOLOGY here, but I do. And thats just plain silly.

Cameron´s own blue Anime fantasy with ears and tails.

since it's all just fiction, no need to discuss about tails and blue skin, is there?

Maybe, but I prefer hard science fiction over this. This is just nice looking entertainment from Cameron.
Even Dragon's Egg (if you know the book) is quite realistic in scientific terms if compared to Avatar.

Possible future Blu-ray purchase... A big Yes =D

None can see the future - so there is no "realistic" or "unrealistic" about future fantasy fiction. ;-)

True, from technical point of view.
I am mostly talking about astrobiology side of Avatar.
Pandora looks really nice in Avatar (great visuals), but Na'vi are too
humanlike. In real universe, biology/evolution just does not work that way.
But of course, if Na'vi would have been 6 legged alien (that would look like
a hybrid between a apider and a beaver), that wouldnt be as entertaining. :B

I read mostly hard science fiction, so that explains my views in this matter.

I´ll see Avatar tomorrow btw - I still believe its good entertainment, despite my hard criticism.
And of course - Its a James Cameron movie! :w00t!:

Let's not get into detail with astrobiology - it's not even probable that creatures on extraterrestrial planets are carbon based...

The Na'vi are designed for the purpose of the film - if they were e.g. greenish plasma-blobs, mixing them with human genome would have been ridiculous. At least they look slightly more alienish than vulcans and definitly cuter than those Giger aliens ;-)

Well, it could be silicon based life - The most common answer..
But we are far away from knowing that for sure. :tears:

I agree. They (Na´vi) are a bit more cuter this way :giggle:

Btw. I just saw Avatar and my initial rating would be 3.5/5
After I buy that Blu-ray, maybe that score will go even higher..
